This trio, probably classifiable as an electro-clash outfit, flawlessly merges the energy of rock, the elegance of pop and the sensuality of dance music. Emma Peal’s music - though steeped in a healthy dose of grinding guitars - blends hypnotic loops, samples, electro beats with atmospheric backdrops. This is, without a doubt, music that finds its own in a live setting: sweeping and hot-blooded. Emma Peal seems to divulge a brave new world where pleasure and free speech rule. Bandleader Vincent Peal is above all a visual artist – painting and video – who was heavily influenced by Punk and New Wave-bands like the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Kraftwerk and New Order. After a few years of globetrotting, the ex-punk unveiled his own band: Emma Peal. After a coincidental encounter with the leading lady of the cult series “The Avengers”, during a brief stay in London, that had to be the name. Thanks to its steamy stage antics, the band quickly acquires a reputation and started touring abroad. The project was, however, put on stand-by after two band members repeatedly ended up in rehab. About a year on, Vincent Peal decides to give the band a new lease on life and, this time, he surrounds himself with musicians of the female ilk. He invites Tamara Geerts, a singer from Ostend, previously with the band Soul Music and Calamity Sev, a lady with a solid electronic music background and training in film. She has been working with the notorious Belgian director Jan Bucquoy for quite a number of years.
Vincent Peal could also be described as notorious. His controversial happenings (a.o. “Vive le Prince Roland”, “Le process Dutroux”,…) regularly land him in the slammer. His original passion, video art, is still his main focus and he’s currently finishing a documentary about his neighbourhood, Les Marolles. Because of their collective passion for the visual arts - they produce their own video material , their artwork - it isn’t surprising that the band attaches so much importance to the visual aspects of their concerts.
Their live performances are intensely enjoyable, as well in sound as in vision. An Emma Peal-concert is so much more than the performing of music; it involves projections, striptease and other startling elements that make the whole experience a full-blown performance. The best remedy against pigeon-holing. The Germans, Belgians, Spaniards and French were certainly not mistaken in booking Emma Peal, way before they were signed to PIAS. Their album has been released in September 2005.

Sans aucun doute, elle est taillée pour le live : mutant et sanguin, Emma Peal semble annoncer un nouveau monde gouverné par le plaisir et la parole libre.
Ayant immergé et évolué dans le courant Punk/New-Wave, le leader du groupe, Vincent Peal, se consacre tout d’abord aux arts plastiques : peinture et vidéo, tout en écoutant les Sex Pistols, les Clashs, en passant par Kraftwerk, et New Order .
Après quelques années de voyage à l’étranger, cet ex-punk forme son propre groupe: Emma Peal. Nom choisi suite à un séjour passé à Londres où il rencontre l’actrice fétiche de la série culte : chapeau melon et bottes de cuir… De par leurs prestations scéniques sulfureuses, le groupe obtient rapidement un succès d’estime et commence à tourner à l’étranger. Mais suite aux internements répétés de deux membres du groupe en cure de désintoxications, le projet reste en stand- by. Un an plus tard, bien décidé à reformer son projet, Vincent Peal s’entoure de la gente féminine. Il fait appel à la chanteuse d’origine Ostendaise Tamara Geerts, issue de la Soul Music et de la bassiste Calamity Sev, issue de la musique électronique et de formation cinématographique. elle travaille depuis de nombreuses années aux côtés du réalisateur subversif Jan Bucquoy.
Subversif, Vincent Peal l’est aussi de par ses différents happenings (cfr « Vive le Prince Roland », « le procès Dutroux », …qui le mèneront à plusieurs reprises au cachot. N’oubliant jamais sa première passion, la vidéo, il termine actuellement un film documentaire sur son quartier : les Marolles.
Approchant plusieurs disciplines plastiques, (le groupe réalise lui-même ses clips vidéos), on comprend mieux pourquoi les membres du groupe accordent de l’importance à l’aspect visuel lors de leur « Live ». Les prestations scéniques, aussi visuelles que soniques, sont toujours jouissives. Projections, strip-tease… les concerts d’Emma Peal tiennent plus de la performance que de la transcription live de leur musique. Une option salutaire à l’heure du tout formaté. D’ailleurs, les Allemands, Belges, Espagnols et Français ne s’y sont pas trompés en les programmant avant leur signature chez Pias. L’album est sorti fin septembre 2005.

Bandleider Vincent Peal, opgegroeid in en beïnvloed door de Punk- en New-Wavestroming houdt zich in de eerste plaats bezig met plastische kunst - schilderen en video - en dit terwijl hij luistert naar bands als de Sex Pistols, The Clash, Kraftwerk en New Order. Na een reeks buitenlandse omzwervingen vormt deze ex-punker zijn eerste band : Emma Peal. Hij noemt zijn groep naar de hoofdactrice van de cultserie "De Wrekers" ("The Avengers") die hij persoonlijk ontmoet tijdens een kort verblijf in Londen. Dankzij haar stomende podiumprestaties vergaart de groep al snel de nodige naam en faam en begint ze in het buitenland te touren. Maar het project raakt al even snel weer in standby omwille van de herhaaldelijke opnames van twee bandleden in allerlei afkick-centra.
Een jaar later beslist Vincent Peal zijn band nieuw leven in te blazen en hij omringt zich deze keer met twee leden van vrouwelijke kunne. Zo doet hij een beroep op de Oostendse zangeres Tamara Geerts van de groep Soul Music en de bassiste Calamity Sev, een dame
met een behoorlijke electronic music background en een vorming in de filmkunst. Zo werkte zij lange tijd aan de zijde van de subversieve regisseur Jan Bucqouy. Subversief, dat is trouwens het minste wat je van deze Vincent Peal kan zeggen. Getuige daarvan zijn vele controversiële happenings (o. a. « Vive le Prince Roland », « le procès Dutroux », …) die hem regelmatig achter de tralies doen verdwijnen. Hij blijft immers trouw aan zijn eerste liefde, de videokunst, en werkt momenteel aan een documentaire over zijngeliefde buurt, de Marollen.
Gezien hun passie voor de plastische kunsten - de groep maakt haar eigen videoclips - begrijp je meteen waarom de band zo'n belang hecht aan de visuele omkadering van hun concerten. Hun live optredens zijn trouwens zowel qua sound als qua beeld heerlijk genietbaar. Projecties, stripteases, en andere verrassende elementen zorgen ervoor dat een Emma Peal-concert meer is dan het live spelen van hun muziek : het zijn echte totaal performances. Een heilzame remedie tegen de hokjesmentaliteit. Trouwens, de Duitsers, de Belgen, de Spanjaarden en de Fransen hebben zich allesbehalve vergist door deze band te booken nog voor ze bij Pias tekende. Hun album verscheen eind september 2005.
